In the spring of 2007 we delivered quilts to 107 children at the In
Leon, we delivered 107 quilts to the children at the Aldea Infantil
SOS León. Aldea Infantil SOS León is a young, but unique institution
that was founded in 2004 to provide homes for orphaned or abandoned
children. They live in modest houses where they are able to remain
with their siblings. Each home is independently run by one woman who
cares for the 8-10 children of her household. In addition to
delivering quilts to these children, we also ran a two-day medical
clinic for the impoverished village of El Porvenir. Although medical
care at the public hospitals is free, patients need to travel two
hours or more by foot to get there, and once they receive
prescriptions, they often don't have the money to purchase
medications. Dr. Meyers saw 174 patients in two days. Many of our
patients walked 2.5 hours only to stand in line for up to eight
hours to be seen in our clinic where we provided free medications.
We gave an additional 60 quilts to the children of El Porvenir.
